Writing does not come easy for me. It takes me hours to complete a blog. I am serious! I am a college grad and can not write. I have no idea when to use a comma, colon, semi colon, how to para phrase, etc. You may wonder where or how I graduated from high school without this basic grasp of English grammar. I cheated! Yeah, ok... so how did I know I was going to need to know these things? No, actually I didn't cheat, except for one time in college when I paid someone to write my term paper. I had to. They wouldn't let me graduate without a passing grade in English. And a D was passing. I actually got a B- on the paper. The professor wrote plagiarist on my paper. I was ecstatic! The B- brought my grade up enough to make a passing D. What a compliment, he called me a plagiarist. That must mean talented, right? LOL!
I think he felt sorry for me. I had gone to his office on several occasions and begged for mercy. After all, I was in my 30's, the oldest person in the class. I worked full time in the ER and carried the full load. I had a GPA of 3. something and... I was paying him to teach me. I am sure he got tired of me coming to his office after class. And in the end, he finally gave in to my relentless sexual advances. JK
It wouldn't have mattered whether I repeated English Comp 4 times; I still would have failed to learn writing skills. I had very inept teachers throughout middle and high school. And, I was allowed to pass to the next grade even though I couldn't write. With 8th grade educations, my parents weren't aware of my lack of writing skills. Hell, I wasn't aware until my first college course in English. There were so many red marks on my papers that I'm sure the professor's pen ran dry when he was grading my papers. And as luck would have it, I passed that course with a B. Yeah, surprise, I can write! But I couldn't. I had made all D's in the course and at that college, a D was a failing grade. So, I didn't question the grade mistake. I did have sense enough to take a English prep class and get a tutor before taking English comp 2 but even that wasn't enough. And I hoped that English comp 2 would be easy. I was sadly mistaken.
So for all of you out there who find writing to be easy, have pity on me. I have even taken English books with me to study in the john or restaurants. People look at me strange when I am at a restaurant when they see I am reading... Sentences For Dummies. So now, I study those books in private.

Just keep on plugging away, get your stories out whether it is punctuated correctly or not. You will enjoy going back and reading them in the future. My personal favorite snippet from this piece "relentless sexual advances". That cracked me up.
ReplyDeleteI tend to write like I talk, but I think that is wrong. Or maybe that is right. I don't have any idea.
I think you are brave.
